The path of Italian fascists to power and its reflection in the Czech press
Klouda, Daniel ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This bachelor's thesis examines the rise of the Italian fascist movement from 1920 to 1922 and its reflection in selected Czech press. The theoretical part focuses on the Czech media landscape after World War I, followed by a description of the historical and political context of the events observed in Italy, briefly outlining the history of the fascist movement from its origins to Mussolini's appointment as prime minister. The practical part involves a qualitative analysis of articles covering six selected events involving Italian fascists, which were significant for the fascist movement. The choice of these events was influenced by their violent nature - through their violent actions, the fascists eliminated opposition and subsequently managed to discredit and undermine state authority and sovereignty to the extent that their rise to power seemed inevitable. The aim of this work is to monitor and compare interpretations of this development through selected events in three Czech newspapers: the national-democratic Národní listy, the independent Lidové noviny, and the communist Rudé právo. The thesis aims to analyze whether and how the ideological convictions of these newspapers were reflected in the rhetoric used to describe the fascist activities in the examined articles.

Vegrichtová, Denisa ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the way how the media described the Spanish flu in selected historical press in the years 1918-1920. The main method used is a quantitative content analysis, which enables the examination of a larger volume of data. Quantitative content analysis is performed on articles from the Czech-language newspaper Lidové noviny and from the American newspaper The Sun. In terms of timeframe, the research is limited to the years 1918-1920, i.e. the period when the Spanish flu epidemic took place. Attention is paid to the way in which the Spanish flu was reported in the selected newspapers, for example the frequency of publishing news about the disease, the main topics of the articles, how often articles about the disease made it to the front pages, or whether the disease is presented as fatal. Subsequently, part of the work is devoted to the qualitative analysis of articles from professional medical journals. Two articles are from 1918, another two articles are from 2018 and 2019. In this case, using qualitative analysis, the different views of doctors on the Spanish flu are analyzed, from 1918 - when the epidemic broke out, and a hundred years later. For example, the reported symptoms of the disease or the method of treatment were examined. At the end of the work, after...

In the first period, the dailies did not pay much attention to Jan Masaryk. They rarely wrote about him, mostly in connection with forming a new government, of which he became a member. In the second period, the number of texts mentioning his name grew significantly. The most common topic was Masaryk's funeral, first its organization, then its course and Masaryk's interview for the French daily L'ordre, from which both dailies quoted very often. At that time, it was a turning point in Czechoslovakia when non-communist ministers resigned, and Klement Gottwald began to form a government in which the Communists prevailed. It deals with the way the selected daily newspapers presented debate on global climate change in 2013-2014. The theoretical part informs readers about the basic concepts and definitions and introduces them to the problem. The empirical part answers the question of whether the media coverage of global climate change in Czech quality daily newspapers is consistent with scientific findings of the international climate discourse represented by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or whether it relies equally on opinions of the small group of so called climate skeptics who question the general consensus of the scientific comunity regarding the causes and consequences of climate change or the need of adequate measures. The results of research indicated that most of analyzed articles informed about climate change the same way as the main climatological research. The largest number of skeptical articles appeared in Lidové noviny. A considerable number of articles didn't comment on the causes of climate change, their seriousness or decisions regarding action.

Kyjonková, Petra ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Gibarti, Jana (referee)
Rigorous thesis "Disruptive media technologies - theories and application to the Czech media environment" deals with a concept of disruptive technologies, which results from the economical model of creative destruction made by founder of innovation theories Joseph Alois Schumpter. Although he had described adverse impact on present market structure at the beginning of 20th century, media studies revealed them lately, precisely in the year 1995 in an economical model of another economist Clayton Christensen. In the late 20th century, with the evolution of the internet, first studies based on media corporations' trade model have investigate disruptive impact of new communication channels on the older ones. This rigorous thesis transmits these analyses onto Czech media environment, which is still strongly affected by the transformation process started 20 years ago. It illustrates the influence of the whole transmutation on the innovation process and the reason why it is so necessary to examine it separately for all Post-communist countries. This work then discusses the impact of internet as a new sort of media on the market, especially analyzing the symbiosis of the internet version and the printed version of the Lidové noviny journal, and unfolds the weak points and the potentials of this co-existence, not...
